My marriage crashed because I was married to a stranger –Iyabo Ojo...

Iyabo Ojo is a household name in the Nollywood industry. She is an actress, a producer and businesswoman. This graduate of Estate Management and mother of two in this interview with Angela Davies, advises young ladies not to rush into marriage. She also disclosed that although she is not desperate, she could give marriage a second chance.

Excerpts:

What is your normal day like?

My normal day is always very busy and hectic. I am a very organised person. I draw up my calendar and I try not to be caught unawares. If I have to, it has to be that I have room to be caught unprepared. That means, I have my time when I work, rest and do business. However, I have noticed that most people fail in life because they are not organised. You have to be organised, and there are prices you have to pay for it. I do my job but when I have to be with my kids, I create that time and overlook the money I am going to be paid to do a job. I tell people that when you draw your calendar, it will help you organise your life because it has worked well for me.

When did you get into Nollywood?

I started in 1998 through the help of my senior colleague, Bimbo Akintola. She introduced me to the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN. I had the opportunity to shoot my first movie, entitled ‘Satanic’. From there, I started doing other minor roles. I got married in 1999 and had my first child that same year. I had to stay away to nurse my baby. In 2001 I had my second child. I came back to the industry towards the end of 2001, and immediately I was asked to travel to Enugu State, Onitsha in Anambra and other places to shoot movies but I couldn’t because my two children were still very young.

I decided to join the Yoruba movie industry, the Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners, ANTP. I joined the Odunfa Caucus where we had the likes of Hassan Taiwo (Ogogo). I trained under them and started acting in Yoruba movies. In reality, when I joined them, I just wanted to become a producer because I felt that was where the money was. But I was advised to go into acting first and take it up from there. In 2004, I became a producer, which had been my dream.

What are the movies you have produced?

My first movie was ‘Botife’; after that I did ‘Bofeboko’ and ‘Ololufe’. My latest production is entitled ‘Arinzo’. I also have two other movies: ‘Enu orofo’ which I coordinated for my personal assistant; it is not out yet. Then I have ‘Tembelo’ which is my first comedy movie. It is going to be released after ‘Arinzo’ part two.

Can you tell us about your academic background?

Growing up, I attended Grace Children School, Gbagada, Lagos, National College Gbagada and then Lagos State Polytechnic where I studied Estate Management.

Why did you choose acting as a career when you studied Estate Management?

Studying Estate Management was not really my choice back then. I had all my required papers except English Language, and I was desperate to get into school. I decided that instead of sitting down at home doing nothing and wasting my time, why not look for a course that I am qualified? Luckily, I found out that I could study Estate Management; however, with the clause that I must pass English before I graduate. I fell in love with the course initially and while in school, I and a few friends even opened an office where we ran an estate and property business, but somehow I found myself in acting. To combine both careers was hectic and time consuming so I had to drop Estate Management and settled for my first love, acting.

How has it been raising your children alone as a single mother?

Being a single mother is very tasking because you have to be the breadwinner. I thank God for the strength. I call myself woman-man because I don’t take defeat and I love challenges. I promised myself that I was going to give my kids the best ever. I am going to work my way through it to make sure that they become what I want them to be. My son is about finishing his secondary school education and I am planning ahead for his university. My daughter too will soon be completing her secondary school education; so it has been a long journey. I have been taking care of my children ever since my daughter was two years old and now she is 12. Though it is not easy, Christ has made it possible.

So what happened? Did your husband leave you or you walked away from the marriage?

I chose to walk away because I wasn’t enjoying the marriage. It wasn’t what I wanted and I blame it on myself because I rushed into marriage. In most early and rushed marriages, you don’t get to study your partner. You people get married and then begin to live like strangers. Things you should have worked out before getting married, you start working it out in the marriage and it doesn’t help. That was what affected me. But I thank God because out of every disappointment, there is a blessing. The blessing is my wonderful children which God has given me. That is the reason why I combined their names, Festus and Priscilla, to form Fespris which I named after my company, to honour them.

Why do you say you rushed into marriage?

I got married when I was 21years old, and I met him just six months before we got married. I was in school and it wasn’t as if I was seeing him all the time to get to know him well. But the kind of family I come from, when I got pregnant, they didn’t want me to have the baby out of wedlock so the marriage came because of the baby and not because we had actually planned it that way. When we got married, he still wanted to be married and be a bachelor and I wanted him to be married and be a husband. We were two different people hence when I found out he wasn’t ready to be a husband, I decided to walk away and go back to my first love, which is acting.

Does he support you and are you still friends?

We are still friends. I don’t make enemies, that is one thing about me. He tries to support in his own little way but I truly handle almost everything and I appreciate the little he does because some men don’t even do anything at all. For my children’s sake, I appreciate what he is doing for them. They have a very good relationship with him; they keep in contact with him. He comes to visit them and they go to visit him too. I try not to come in-between them.

Is there a man in your life and are you willing to give marriage a second chance?

Marriage is a contract. If you had asked me this question five years ago, I would say no. But now, maybe yes, but I am not desperate. I am happy the way I am; if marriage comes, no problem. I don’t draw out my life plan all the way; I draw my daily life plan so I don’t know what God has in store for me. If God says Iyabo, whether you like it or not you must remarry, then I will remarry. That means the right guy will come and I will know. Until that happens, I am very happy with the man I am dating and I love him because I am a one-man, one-woman person. He is taking very good care of me. It is not every relationship that should lead to marriage. For some, you will just be best friends forever; some will lead to marriage and some will not, but if he asks for my hand in marriage, I could say yes. Till then, I am not desperate, I just keep hoping for the best. There are three things I will choose in life, and they are health, happiness and to be as humble as I can be because I already have the greatest thing ever, my beautiful kids. They make me happy, I love being around them and I love them to pieces. I can’t stop talking about them.

What’s your advice for young girls who want to rush into marriage?

I will advise them not to try it because they will rush out. I have seen lots of people after mine who made the same mistake. Initially, when I advise young ladies against rushing into marriage, they tell me that because I made one mistake doesn’t mean it is going to be a mistake for somebody else. You need to study the man you intend to marry because you will be living with a stranger. Even somebody you have dated for five years will shock you in marriage. It takes the first six months to play Romeo and Juliet, the next six months is for tolerance and after that you would decide whether to continue in the marriage or not. You need to study your partner for about a year or two to know and study the person.

What is the worst rumour you have heard about yourself?

They said I had sex in a car in London. I have never done that before, never. I don’t know about tomorrow maybe I might but I haven’t done it before. It was so awkward and funny. People carried the rumour and it was everywhere. I think that is the worst rumour.

Did it make you cry?

No, I was shocked to my bones and I laughed. I really laughed because it was funny to me. There was no truth in what they wrote at all.

Define your style?

I am a very elegant person. I love beauty and I am fashion crazy. I love gold. I create my own style, I don’t move with the crowd except I love the movement. I am a very detailed person, a perfectionist and sometimes I take things to the extreme to make sure it is exactly what I want.

How many tattoos do you have?

I have three tattoos. I have on my chest, arm and at my back. The one on my chest signifies crown, it means I am a queen. The one on my arm signifies love; I am a very loving person. I talk and preach love because I am someone who believes in love. The one at my back is for all my enemies; I am watching them, so they should stay clear.

CELEBRITIES: Who’s after Ibinabo Fiberesima.

For sometime now, Nollywood actor, Mcsmith Ochendo has been explaining why he dragged the incumbent president of Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Ibinabo Fiberesima to court.
The dreadlock-wearing actor cum musician said, he wants the court to interpret a particular section of the constitution as it applies to the position of the president of the guild.

According to him, “ My interest in all these is that I want a guild that has respect for the rule of law and the constitution. AGN is not a private property owned by the Board of Trustees or myself.
“The court should interpret Section 4 (u) of the amended constitution of Actors Guild of Nigeria, whether it is lawful for an ex-convict to vie for any elective position.
“Was Ibinabo convicted at any point in time by any court of competent jurisdiction? If the answer is in the affirmative, which I believe it is because I have a certified copy of the true judgment delivered by the highly revered Justice Deborah Oluyemi of the Lagos High Court on February 20, 2009, then Ibinabo has no moral justification to occupy such exalted position.”
However, while hearing on the case comes up on the 18th of September 2013, at the Federal High court, Lagos, questions are being asked today,as Ochendu alleges threat to his life regarding the case.

CELEBRITIES : Revealed; How Actress, Lola Alao's New Husband Was Convicted For Fraud In Kuwait

Recently Nollywood actress, Lola Alao got married in Atlanta USA to Adewale Yakubu Ajibola and the couple literally could not contain their excitement.

Lola was positively glowing in her creamy wedding dress while Yakubu sporting a bespoke grey suit, wore a disarming smile.
Though not an opulent wedding, they exchanged marital vows, flaunted the marriage certificate and the pictures that went viral online generate mixed reactions. There are fears too, solemn fears: Lola's new hubby is plagued with an ugly past - a credit card scam that kept him 'inside' in a Kuwaiti cell.
According to an insider, this isn't the first time the 'Nigerian big boy' has been on the wrong side of the law. His claim to relevance and easy bait for unsuspecting women who wanted love and affection, has been his American citizenship's status and his dashing looks.
When he was arrested in Kuwait for the credit card scam, Yakubu, was able to answer the police questions adroitly, but the authorities were not convinced of his claim that he was innocent.
A ring of 'scammers' had some months before his arrival, operated in the same manner and went away with their loot in the Middle East commercial city. Unsuspectingly, Yakubu walked into a booby trap. While Wale Yakubu Ajibola, the Nigerian-born American citizen served terms for one year, the Big Sam turned the other cheek.
Lola, who is hell-bent on getting a husband, was not too lucky last year when her hatched plot to marry another Nigerian based in Europe was thwarted by her first husband, Dare Ogunlana, who unleashed a media attack on her. Meanwhile, Lola found a close ally in another actress, Bukky Wright, also married to a US-based Nigerian, Wale Onitilo.

Lola and Bukky seem to be best friends in real life because their chemistry comes through effortlessly. Since her marriage to US-based lover and car dealer, Dare Ogunlana, broke up, the Kogi-born actress has met a few men but she has not been quite lucky to have one of them put a ring on it. Bukky, we reliably gathered has been concerned and busy setting Lola up on dates with non-famous friends and some buddies of her current hubby. She wanted Lola to have her kind of relationship that will guarantee American citizenship status.

When Yakubu walked in, it was a willing and desperate Lola he met and, trust her, she quickly hung on tight. Sources disclosed that while he was cooling his feet in the Kuwaiti authorities' cell, Lola scampered for his release by consulting marabouts widely.

They were constantly in touch on phone and gradually they built the affection. On release some months ago, after serving terms in Kuwait for one year, she sent him a ticket to come home, made few appearances at functions that were private and they bonded before he returned to the United States to prepare for the August wedding.
While Lola has taken the highroad by walking down the aisle with Yakubu, brimming with broad smiles that she has found love and a good match, observers of Nollywood marriages and the rate at which it dissolves, feel Lola may have finally found a big catch to perfect her plans for an American citizenship status.

It was revealed Yakubu has never been married but he has three kids, including a set of twins from two women among his strings of ladies. From his profile, though he claimed to be an ICT expert, he is not quite buoyant financially and his recent incarceration in Kuwait has not helped.

There is no record of an apartment in his name; the newly married couple are guests in one of the hubby's relations' house in Atlanta. Prior to his ill-fated venture in Kuwait, he is said to have been living off his relations in California before life threw terrible storms at him and he moved to Houston.
In his bid to survive, he crossed to Atlanta where he allegedly joined the credit scam racket popularly known as 'Track 1, Track 2'. For Lola, it has been a tortuous and lonely journey with her 10-year- old daughter, Omowunmi from her first marriage with Dare.
As she stepped out from the depths of despair to happily ever after, it is not clear if Dare will not sue her for bigamy as their marriage consummated in Nigeria has not been officially dissolved. Lola and Yakubu are expected in Nigeria soon.

CELEBRITIES: NOLLYWOOD DIVORCE SAGA

Our ladies in the movie industry in Nigeria just keep changing men like diapers. In the last couple of years what has reared its ugly head out of Nollywood are stories of divorce. With the recent divorce of Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, it is no longer news that a lot of marriages which involve crème de la crème Nollywood actresses ended in another sad love story. Funke’s drama with husband of barely one year tops the list, given the glamour that accompanied the solemnization of their marriage and the manner in which the separation was relayed to the populace.

Most often than not, these super stars knew they were diving into troubled waters but for one reason or another they just didn’t give a damn. Funke Akindele’s husband was known to have fathered over ten children by different women before Funke decided to settle down with him.

Monalisa Chinda, who is romancing Lanre Nzeribe cannot say she is so wet behind the ears not to know that the guy is known as a top playboy. Many Nollywood actresses have also married at the expense of some other women who have had to relinquish their men to their beauty, fame and influence.

At least the methodology deployed by the husband, choosing Facebook to break the divorce news made Funke to have many sympathizers. That could have emboldened Funke, because she has since shrugged it off and is already painting the town red as she was spotted in many public outings.

Chika Ike Crashed Marriage….

Chika Nancy Ike was born November 8, 1985. She is a UN Ambassador and Nigerian actress, CEO of Fancy Nancy Collections. Chika is also a Human Kinetics and Health Education graduate from the University of Lagos.

In 2005, she landed her first roles in the movies Sweet love and Bless the Child, directed by T. Chidi Chikere. She is a two-time African Movie Academy Award nominee. In 2006 she was nominated for best upcoming actress and in 2009 she was nominated for best supporting actress. She founded "Chika Ike (Help A Child)" foundation.

Chika Ike got married to Tony Eberiri in June 2006, although she has been separated from her husband, for almost two years but the glee with which she announced the divorce granted to her on July 26 2013 by an Abuja High Court; two months after filing for divorce, set adrift once again another divorce saga which has an uncanny resemblance to that of Funke Akindele’s.

While Funke’s husband, Kehinde Oloyede took to Facebook to announce his separation from his wife, Chika chose Twitter to tell her fans that “she was finally free of Tony Eberiri”. “I’m now officially divorced. Thanks,” she tweeted.

The INFO EXTRA gathered from a reliable source that the Ekwuluobia, Umuchiana Village, Anambra State born actress, spread all sorts of falsehood against her husband to secure a divorce from the "ordinary" man.
After making some money, which some say could be traced to sugar daddies, Chika Ike decided to dump her husband at all cost, as he longer match her "new class". Even after she got the divorce the actress went further to lie against the man on the social media that he was a wife beater.
The man somehow saw the story and has sent a strong warning to Chika Ike:

Mr Tony Eberiri was said to have sent her a clear warning to stop spreading further lies about him otherwise he is going to expose all her dirty acts.

Funke and Chika may now be on the spot but they have a long list of others before them. While a lot has been speculated on why these marriages fail, investigations have revealed that top on the list are abuse, infidelity, violence and what they have come to term ‘irreconcilable differences’.

Chika Ike’s Open Letter To Her Fans

Nollywood actress, Chika Ike in an open letter to her fans, described how she suffered physical abuse in the hands her husband for five years. Below is an open letter from the star actress, Chika Ike.

The past three years has been a very emotional period for me. I focused my energy on work and to build back my self esteem. its been really hard for me to come out straight and talk about this because sometimes I pinch myself to wake up and not believe that I was a victim of domestic violence. I’ve been through a lot in my life, faced a lot of challenges but this is one topic I’ve tried so hard to avoid and have been waiting for the right time but I have come to a resolve that there’s really no right time because every second of the day, lives are being lost due to domestic violence. I was a victiim of domestic violence in my marriage and that was the singular reason I left my marriage, aside other reasons.

Growing up as a girl. I was always known as the sweetest kid on the block, before I got married, I have been through some relationships and for once no man had ever laid a finger on me. The first time it happened in my marriage I didn’t understand it because I am not the type of woman a man beats but I guess there are no types. It just happens and no woman deserves it. As a young girl I thought it was love or his way of expressing his emotions, after every beating he pleads , cries and says it won’t happen again, once again I thought it was love and made excuses for him. Over the years when it kept happening consistently I started looking for other definitions for it. I started loosing myself pride, self esteem , self worth, and most painfully i lost a pregnancy (Miscarriage) I almost lost my life in the process then I realised how serious and abnormal it really was.

I have heard and read a lot of accusations from ignorant people who don’t know my story,I guess that’s why they are ignorant. I was 20yrs old and very naïve to the world when I got married .“ They said I married for money“ LOL. I was married to a corporate guy,who had a 9_5 job in a bank, Lives in a rented 2 bedroom apartment at Egbe.. So do the maths! . I married for love. I did a traditional wedding. A white wedding and a court wedding. So that’s how much I wanted to be married forever. For five years I hoped, prayed & wished that one day it will all change. But the last straw that broke the carmels back was during a heated argument he threw a glass jug to my face and I dogged it and it shattered on d wall. I saw death flash before me and I made a decision to save my life. I left my marriage.

Am not saying this to draw pity from anyone because we are entitled to our opinions and believes. I am not also saying this to discourage people from falling in love because its a beautiful feeling and I still believe in it. I am saying this to educate, share and talk about my experience as a victim of domestic violence because it is real.
Monalisa Chinda

Sexy Nollywood actress and divorced mother of one, Monalisa Chinda is pained at the fact that she has to go through the rough path of a divorce; she would have loved to remain with her ex-husband. Now that they are divorce she said "God forbid," she can't accept him back again.

Monalisa Chinda Dumps Lanre Nzeribe; Lover Boy Threatens Brimstone

Going by the information gathered by The INFO EXTRA, Monalisa Chinda has allegedly called it quit with alleged serial lover, Lanre Nzeribe and the lover boy is allegedly threatening brimstone and fire.

We learnt that Monalisa dumped Lanre due to his alleged promiscuous ways, which the light-skinned screen queen got fed up of.

Efforts by some friends to make Monalisa accept Lanre back has reportedly met brick walls as the Rivers State-born actress is said to be ready for whatever action Lanre might allegedly take on the issue.

We once got a hint that Monalisa was allegedly forced into the relationship in the first place due to an issue Lanre allegedly capitalised on.

Meanwhile, a source close to Monalisa authoritatively confirmed the break-up. The source confidently said that Monalisa and Lanre are no more together as lovers.

Laide Bakare messy divorce saga….

See the reasons for their break up below:

We would like to announce to the general public on behalf of Nollywood star actress, Laide Bakare that she has officially opted out of her relationship with Mr. Okunfulire, her former husband.

While it lasted, the actress showed the utmost level of maturity, in spite of the “glaring injustice’ from her former husband. Laide has endured the marriage with Mr. Okunfulire to whom she displayed total affection.

But things fell apart when she discovered that she was indeed married to a man with a legally married wife and two children not a single man she thought he was as told her by Mr. Okunfulire when the relationship started.

But, being a celebrity who has become a model to young persons in the society, coupled with the need to exercise decorum, she has kept fate with the marriage until lately when she could no longer continue and then called it quit.

Her former union with Mr. Okunfulire produced a beautiful child, Similoluwa who is nicknamed Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Laide has just entered into a new relationship with a Lagos based popular businessman, Mr. Tunde Oriowo a.k.a ATM. The relationship began late last 2012 and culminated in the lovers officially sealing it with the Muslim rites called Nikkai, at a quiet ceremony in Lagos attended by trusted associates and close family members from both sides.

Laide Bakare and Mr. Tunde Oriowo will be holding the wedding proper with a big bash before the end of 2013.

Unlucky Stella Damasus ….

Stella Damasus was born April 24, 1978. She is a Nigerian actress and singer. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the African Movie Academy Awards in 2009. She was born Stella Ojukwu in Asaba, Delta State. She grew up in Benin City where she completed most of her primary education.

She lost her first husband, Jaiye Aboderin to the cold hands of death shortly after their marriage. After that, she tried to get on with life and tried her luck with Emeka Nzeribe. That luck did not hold as they separated just after two years, citing ‘irreconcilable differences’.

Stella Damasus's estranged husband, Emeka Nzeribe might be suing her and her new husband, Daniel Ademinokan soon. Emeka told some of his friends that the actress has no right to re-marry since they were yet to be properly divorced.

The controversial Nollywood actress got married secretly to her colleague’s ex-husband outside of the country few months ago, a story which was later leaked to the public.

Saheed and Fathia Balogun.....

The controversial divorce of two prominent yoruba movie stars, Fathia and saidi balogun is still a matter that is generating an eyebrow among their teeming fans. The both love birds parted ways on the basis of individual ego and other counter acquisitions coming from the two famous movie guru. Since their separation, several issues involved the two prominent movie stars were revealed to the public which still remain an amazing part of the separation.

Shortly after their divorce, it was gathered that Saidi Balogun re-married to a London based big babe but the union collapsed in a day time. Also rumor had it that James bond of Naija movie actor saidi balogun had a hot romance with the star actress, funke adesiyan which later turned out to be the most celebrated controversial romance. The relationship crashed as a result of what funke described as hell of her dear life.

Also fathia balogun sometime ago, proposed to become a new bridegroom to an American based big boy, but the marriage could not hold because the charming prince was still legally marry to his wife. But the Edo born talented actress disclosed the proposed marriage to the said guy was a tools she used to woe the general public and to get a media attention because she claimed that she was in no time plan any marriage with anybody. She maintained that the issue of marriage is a close chapter for now because she needs more concentration in her blossom acting career

The multiple award winning star actress registered that his ex-husband, saidi balogun, was only toying over his decision to stop her from further using of the name “balogun”. Fathia in her response, ‘I laugh, my name is fathia balogun and it’s going to remain Balogun for life’ She further boasted, ‘nobody can ever change that and nobody can stop me from answering that name’

Fathia’s response can certainly brew up a battle of the fittest because it would be re-called that saidi balogun once said in an interview that he would soon stop fathia from appending BALOGUN to her name which the star actress remain adamant and described the decision as a child’s play.

Before she recovers from one scandal or controversy, she is neck deep into another. Star actress Fathia Balogun seems not to be bothered by her name being the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The latest gist about her is that, she is currently in a sizzling romance with Goriola Hassan, ex-husband of fellow actress, Ayo Adesanya.

Tongues began to wag a few weeks ago when both of them stormed a show in Lagos GRA.It was on Wednesday,28th December,2011. The event was the end-of-year show of lewd popular singer,St. Janet at Asake Afrocentric Pub,situated at 21,Joel Ogunaike Street,Ikeja GRA,Lagos.

Though the duo did not enter the exclusive hangout for big boys and babes together,Goriola drove his Honda Element car to the venue while Fathia strolled in less than 5 minutes later. Those who saw them at the event noticed how the 2 were into each other.

The lovebirds sat closely throughout the show and they left together. As if that was not enough, the duo were also cynosure of all eyes at the recent birthday party of star actress Mercy Aigbe on Sunday,1st January,2012 at La Veronique Hotel,Oregunwa Street,Oregun,Ikeja,Lagos.

The duo who initially sat at the VIP section of the hall where London-based juju singer,Sunny Melody was performing obviously had a wonderful time while the show lasted. This put a peg to insinuations that the duo were romantically linked.

Fathia drove Goriola’s Honda Element car to the event with the number plate ‘FB’ an acronym for Fathia Balogun which she used on her Nissan Jeep that no one can explain why she refused to ride in it for about a year. The duo have been reportedly sighted hugging, kissing and cuddling.

For the records, Fathia’s marriage to Saheed Balogun broke up about 3 years ago and since then she has been romantically linked with several Yoruba movie actors and a prominent marketer.

Goriola’s marriage to Ayo Adesanya packed up more than 2 years ago and since then he has not been linked with any actress or known babe.

Lola Alao….

Nigerian actress Lola Alao got married on Thursday, August 8, 2013, to an American-based IT expert, Wale Ajibola. Lola has a daughter from her previous marriage.

The Yoruba actress said she has forgiven her ex-husband, Dare Ogunlana, but allegations made by the man during the heat of the divorce saga are still fresh.

Dare described Lola as “diabolical, deceitful and a woman not to be trusted”, to which the woman responded with maturity by keeping mum.

to be continued...
