ONYEKA ONWENU APPOINTED NCWD CEO

 

President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed a renowned Nigerian singer, actress and politician Onyeka Onwenu as the Executive Director (Chief Executive Officer) of the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Abuja.

Onyeka Onwenu, an indigene of Onitsha, Anambra State, was born on May 17, 1961. She is a famous singer, an award-winning actress, the former chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts.

It is expected that she will assume duties immediately.

JONATHAN SACKS JOY EMORDI, ONE OTHER SPECIAL ADVISER

 President Goodluck Jonathan has terminated the appointment of two of his Special Advisers.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati.

The statement said the appointment of Joy Emordi, who was Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, and that of Tunji Olagunju, his Special Adviser on the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), had been terminated with immediate effect.

"President Jonathan thanks Mrs. Emordi and Dr. Olagunju for their services and wishes them success in their future endeavours".

Mr. Olagunju had served as Special Adviser to the President on NEPAD since June 2007 while Mrs. Emordi was appointed in 2011.

The President had also last week fired nine of his ministers.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: British MPs rejected possible UK military action in Syria

British MPs on Thursday August 29 2013 rejected possible UK military action in Syria, which almost guarantee that Britain plays no direct role in any U.S. attack on Bashar Assad's government.

A government motion was defeated by 285 to 272, a majority of 13 votes.
British PM David Cameron stated after the vote that "the British Parliament, reflecting the views of the British people, does not want to see British military action."
Meanwhile, the US said it would "continue to consult" with London, "one of our closest allies and friends". White House issued a statement that reads "President Obama's decision-making will be guided by what is in the best interests of the United States."

It added that Mr Obama "believes that there are core interests at stake for the United States and that countries who violate international norms regarding chemical weapons need to be held accountable".
Obama administration officials on Thursday told a group of US lawmakers in a conference call that "it is beyond a doubt that chemical weapons were used, and used intentionally by the Assad regime," said Eliot Engel, the senior Democratic member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
