AMAECHI BLAMES THE NEGLECT OF PH AIRPORT ON RIFT WITH JONATHAN

Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, on Saturday accused the Minister of Aviation, Mrs. Stella Oduah, of abandoning the remodeling of the Port Harcourt International Airport because of his rift with President Goodluck Jonathan.

Amaechi, who said this in an interview with Channels Television, said apart from leaving the airport in deplorable state, the minister impounded the aircraft belonging to the state "for no reason."

The governor said he had reported the minister to the President to no avail.

He said, "I have gone to the President and told him that because of the disagreement between Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, who is not Rivers State, and the President, the minister of aviation has abandoned the airport. They started that airport with Kano, Lagos, Abuja, Benin, and Calabar. The rest have been completed, including Enugu which has been commissioned. It is hatred. The Minister of Aviation is reckless on that."

Amaechi raised the alarm that with the state of the international airport, terrorists could have easy access and attack it at will.

He added that due to his rift with Jonathan, Oduah had prevented the state government from fulfilling its responsibility of securing the state and fighting crimes, including oil theft, using surveillance helicopters that it had paid for.

"We paid for two surveillance helicopters that would fly around Rivers State (and detect crime) including oil theft and report real time to police, air force, army and the government house. She (Oduah) refused the helicopters from coming. They are there in America and the government of America has been wondering why we don't want to take our plane and the President (Jonathan) is aware," he said.

But in response, the Special Assistant (Media) to the Aviation Minister, Joe Obi, described the allegations as untrue and false, insisting that huge work was going on at the Port Harcourt airport.

"Port Harcourt is among the 11 airports in the first phase of airport remodelling. If you go to that airport now, it is completely different from what it was two or three years ago," Obi said.

TARABA HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY SPEAKER ESCAPES DEATH

The Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly, Hon. Haruna Tsokwa, escaped being killed by unknown gunmen on September 18, 2013, Wednesday.

The assault occurred in a border town called Bade, which is located between Kaduna and Nasarawa States.

According to a source of SaharaReporters, the gunmen attacked in a commando style. They fired shots at the convoy, but their attempts to cause severe damage were unsuccessful.

Two of the Speaker's guards, police officers attached to the convoy, were wounded in a gunfight. The officers, identified as Levi Kenneth and Daniel Innocent, both 35 years old, were almost immediately taken to the hospital, after the attackers were overpowered. The gunmen were able to escape.

It would be noted that Hon. Haruna Tsokwa Tsokwa has been in the middle of the political controversy, concerning the return to Taraba of ailing Governor Danbaba Danfulani Suntai. The Speaker led the resistance against the efforts of Governor Suntai to resume his office in his condition.

GOVERNOR ALIYU BLASTS WIKE OVER COMMENTS ON EDUCATION

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, on Wednesday, berated the acting Minister of Education, Mr. Nyeson Wike, over his comments on the state of the education sector in the states.

The governor said education administration was not for 'riff raffs.'

Aliyu spoke while signing into law the Niger State University of Education Bill at the Government House, Minna. He said, "I don't know when he got into education; education is not for riff raffs.

"Wike should be warned to stay clear of Niger State. If he (Wike) can fight the governor of his state (Rivers), he cannot fight other governors, he should take his time."

Reacting to the comment, Wike's Special Adviser (Media), Simeon Nwakaudu, said the minister would not be distracted by criticisms but would rather focus on the delivery of access to quality education.

Nwakaudu said, "He (Wike) believes that all Nigerian children deserve access to education, hence he advocated that state governments should invest more in education.

"As a seasoned administrator, lawyer and former secondary school teacher, Wike is passionate about education, hence he has consistently built synergy to develop the sector, working closely with governors at all times.
"Nigerians are conversant with the Almajiri girl child and library projects supervised by the minister to uplift access to education in the country. He will continue to focus on the onerous task of improving education in the country."

Aliyu had said that the Niger State University of Education, to be located at the present site of the Niger State College of Education, Minna, would provide avenue for training of teachers.

Defending the decision of the government to establish the university, Aliyu lamented that all the states in the northern part of the country could not boast of 50 per cent qualified teachers to man their primary schools. He assured that the University of Education in Minna would attempt to bridge the gap.

He said when the university became operational the government would set deadline for unqualified teachers to be certified.

He added that the country had to be more serious about educating its children, insisting that "education should be the priority of every government".

Taraba Crisis: Deputy Governor to Continue in Acting Capacity, as Suntai Loyalists Plot New Schemes

The Taraba State Assembly, led by the Deputy Speaker, Tanko Maikarsi, on September 2, 2013, Monday, adopted a fresh resolution asking the Deputy Governor, Garba Umar, to continue as Acting Governor in view of the incapacitation of Governor Danbaba Suntai.

The resolution was a follow up to a press statement issued by the lawmakers last week after meeting Governor Suntai, and declaration that he was in no condition to run the state in view of his poor health.
Monday's resolution puts a legal stamp on the position of the acting governor.

Moreover, Mr. Garvey Yaro, the Secretary to the State Government originally appointed by the Acting Governor Umar, returned to his office on Monday and carried out his official duties.

The former Attorney-General, Mr. Timothy Kataps, who was "appointed to the position" by Suntai last week did not assume the office due to the intervention of the House.
The return to work of the SSG is a big blow to the cabal led by Suntai's wife and Senator Emmanuel Bwatcha, who had spearheaded the audacious effort to manipulate Taraba State.
Meanwhile, Governor Sunati remains marooned at the Governor's Lodge with the two medical personnel that accompanied him from the United States, as well as his younger brother, Babangida.

Acting Governor Umar has not returned from Abuja yet, as he led Taraba State delegates to the historical Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) convention at the weekend.
In the federal capital, the Acting Governor has reportedly faced pressure from Suntai's supporters not to contest the 2015 elections so that one of the Suntai's loyalists can run.
The cabal is also said to be considering a legal option with the aid of Damian Dodo (SAN), who has reportedly assembled a high-powered team. But the cabal is afraid that a drawn out legal process my completely destroy their agenda to frustrate the control of the state by the acting governor and his loyalists.

Sources in the State Government of Taraba denied reports that banks were not honoring cheques issues by the acting governor, asserting that the state was carrying out normal financial transactions and today paid allowances to several aides of the acting governor.

SOUTH-WEST GOVERNORS CONSIDER YORUBA AS THE LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria may soon approve the use of Yoruba language, their mother tongue, as the language of instruction at Primary schools in the region.

It has been revealed after the meeting on Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) held by South-West Governors in Ibadan, Oyo State capital on the evening of August 29, 2013, Thursday.

Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Governor of Ekiti State, has spoken on behalf of his colleagues, said a region-wide education summit would soon be hosted by Osun state, to look at a mechanism that would allow the region come up with a common curriculum for basic education.

According to Dr. Fayemi, the curriculum would place emphasis on the use of Yoruba as a language of instruction in basic schools across the region.

It could be recalled that the National Policy on Education (1976) had recommended that the mother tongue of pupils should be the language of instruction at the elementary education level.

A few weeks ago at a forum in held in Akure Dr. Fayemi stated that pupils can learn faster when taught in their first language, according to researchers.

Speaking further on the outcome of the meeting, the Governor of Ekiti State said the region was planning an alternative economic framework that will make the knowledge economy which the region is known for, serve as bulwark against the emerging reduction in the resource-based economy that the country currently has.

"What happens to us? We are being futuristic here. What happens to us as western Nigeria and we are concerned about Nigeria as a country? What happens to us when oil no longer flows or when oil sells for one dollar? Where would the resources come from? How do we harness the energy of our people, their creativity and innovation as scholars?" Dr. Fayemi said.

Other issues discussed at the meeting were the exploration of sports as a unifying vehicle for development in the region and homeland security framework to forestall any security challenges.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: Emmanuel Bello, Suntai's Aide Strikes Back; Governor "Fit," Lawmakers "Wicked"…. Yar'Adua's Story Repeated

The decision of the State House of Assembly to recognise Taraba State's Deputy Governor, Garba Umar, as acting governor has provoked angry reaction from the ailing Governor Suntai's aide.
It would be recalled that earlier on August 29 2013, Taraba lawmakers had issued a statement, signed by 16 of the 24 House of Assembly members, advising Mr. Suntai to "return to the U.S. for further treatment", and declaring him "unfit" to lead the state.
However, the Commissioner for Information in the Taraba cabinet dissolved recently by Mr. Suntai, Emmanuel Bello, has confirmed over the telephone that Mr. Suntai is "fit to continue his duties," adding that the members who signed the statement acted "according to the figment of their imagination."
Mr. Bello, assuring he still speaks for Mr. Suntai, described the action of the lawmakers as "null and void," adding that they "do not have the constitutional power to determine whether somebody is sick."
He said, it is only "medical experts that have the power to determine the state of health of a person."
"What yardsticks and parameters did they use to say the governor is not fit?" he wondered and went on, "These people visited the governor yesterday and he recognised all of them by their faces and names, it is totally unfair of them to turn around and say he is unfit to rule."
Mr. Bello said Mr. Suntai could "read, write and sign documents," therefore, "What is the standard of who a governor should be?"
"These people are not fair to his Excellency, and they are wicked. Taraba people are not with them, and even the Majority Leader of the House has disassociated himself from them. What they are doing is unconstitutional and a violation of other Nigerian laws," he said.
Speaking further, Mr. Bello said all Mr. Suntai needed to do after he came back was to transmit a letter informing the House of his return and resumption of duties.
He said the letter was not supposed to be subjected to debate as it was merely "for the information of the House alone."
Mr. Bello also stated that, as long as the members did not subject the governor to medical checks, they had no reason to state that he was unfit for office.
"Have they subjected the governor to medical check? Can they give us a medical report? As far as the people of Taraba are concerned, the governor is not sick; he addressed them yesterday and they are satisfied with his state of health," he said.
Meanwhile, the media aide of Acting Governor Umar, Kefas Sule, said he would issue a statement later on Thursday on the position of his boss.

Taraba State is witnessing a story very similar to the late President Umar Yar'Adua's. Many activists say "charlatans" are taking over the government and ruling in the name of Governor Danbaba Suntai. The statement was made at a press conference, organized by the "Say No Campaign", United Action for Democracy, and Civil Society Network Against Corruption, on Tuesday, in Abuja.
In a joint appeal by Ezenwa Nwagwu of "Say No Campaign Nigeria," Jaye Gaskia of United Action for Democracy, and Olarewaju Suraj of Civil Society Network Against Corruption, the groups demanded "that the unfolding charade in Taraba State be brought to an end, and the Acting Governor be either allowed to continue to discharge the duties of the governor unfettered."
Although sympathizing with Governor Suntai, who has last weekend returned to Nigeria following 10 months recuperation period from the consequences of the plane crash he and his aides were involved in, the group harshly criticized attempts by some politicians to make governance "unrealistic."
"These charlatans have desperately kept trying to cling to political power, and by extension the resources of Taraba State through series of craftily-woven plots of deceits, meant to hoodwink the Nigeria public in a manner similar to the unfortunate Turai-Yar'Adua saga," it was said in a statement.
"Deliberately and shamelessly, these people continue to feed the public with lies (sometimes garnished with half truths) about the true state of health of Governor Suntai.
"Every indication and report since his unfortunate plane crash leaves no one in doubt that Mr. Suntai is medically brain-damaged, and is thus unfit to discharge his constitutional duties according to the Nigerian Constitution.
"By plotting this deceit and subterfuge around his supposed recovery, the architects of this evil plot are able to cling to power and rule Taraba State by proxy in the name of the innocent Governor Suntai whilst they pillage the State's resources for themselves and their cronies in Taraba and Abuja."
The handling of the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike by the Nigerian Government also was condemned by the group; the Government itself was described as "tyrannical, wicked, unpatriotic and profligate."
"We watch with sadness as the political classes trivialize the lives of our young people and the future of this Country by refusing to honour its agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Health Workers' Union; as well as for three months previously with respect to the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP).
"For six weeks now (and counting), young, virile, sound-minded and able bodied Nigerians have once again been kept idle and hopeless as the political elite display its lack of respect and concern for the youth of this Country by its failure to meet the legitimate and pragmatic demands of the striking lecturers."
The Federal Government also came under the fire for not showing adequate concern in addressing the "completely derelict, comatose and unsavoury state of public education in the country."
"It is instructive to note that not a single member of the Federal Government's negotiating team in the FG/ASUU face off have their child(ren) in any public university/Polytechnic in Nigeria.
"Since they are not personally affected, and can afford at our expense through illegitimate earnings to procure the education of their children in private institutions at home and abroad," the statement read.
The groups called on the federal government to acquiesce to the demands of ASUU and implement the recommendations of the report of the assessment team on the state of Nigerian public universities.

Breaking News: Taraba crisis deepens as Suntai sacks Cabinet, names new SSG, CoS

The political crisis rocking Taraba State deepened on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 morning with the dissolution of the State Executive Council by the Governor, Danbaba Suntai.
Apart from sacking the cabinet, Suntai also removed the Secretary to the State Government and appointed Mr. Timothy Gibon Kataps in his place. Similarly, Suntai fired his former Chief of Staff and named Alhaji Aminu Jika as his new CoS.

The governor, who made the sweeping changes through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Sylvanus Giwa, asked all the affected commissioners and officials to hand over to their respective Permanent Secretaries with immediate effect.
Although Suntai explained that the move was aimed strengthening the administration, analysts believe the recuperating governor wants to take greater control of his government, which has been in the hands of those he does not trust, for about a year.
The undercurrent has exposed the divided loyalty between those in support of Suntai, who returned to the country on Sunday and his Deputy, Garba Umar, who has been acting in his absence in the last ten months.
While the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr. Haruna Tsokwa, asked the governor to come and address them at plenary as a condition for resuming, the Majority Leader, Mr. Joseph Albasu Kunini, asked the governor to start work with immediate effect.
